*****A Wonderful Place to Have A Most Enchanting Vacation
Bill A. and Kathy L., Kendall Park, NY
My husband and I wanted a deeper experience of France than we’d had on any of our earlier trips - we wanted to live like locals. To achieve that dream we sought a unique and idyllic setting in the south of France. Our extensive research revealed Coeur de Lion, a beautiful 13th century house in the historic perched village of St. Cirq Lapopie, high above the River Lot. We later learned that St. Cirq Lapopie has officially been designated as one of the most beautiful villages in France.
The owner created Coeur de Lion from the remnants of a 13th Century stone structure on the tiny street which winds it's way uphill from the arch, the only remaining remnant of the medieval fortress wall, to the top of the village, high above the river. The views from the house are stunning, either overlooking the hillside and the Lot river or down the winding street to the ancient gate.
As enchanting as St. Cirq Lapopie is, it is also ideally located for exploring the whole Lot Valley and neighboring areas that are rife with beautiful chateaux, other perched villages, castles, scenic overlooks, historic churches, cathedrals. We visited Rocamadour, Conques, Belcastel, Albi, Lacapelle Livron, Soulliac, Sarlat, Cahors, Peche Merle, an elaborate and fascinating grotto, and travelled the wine road of Cahors.
We used the chef's kitchen to make wonderful meals for ourselves and visitors. And when we didn't feel like cooking, we dined in style at the restaurants in St. Cirq Lapopie and the surrounding area. The food and wine in the Lot valley is varied and excellent. Just one story - we drove to Cajarc to attend the Festival de Safran and had a lovely lunch at L'Allee de Vigne. Each course of the four course lunch in this charming restaurant, including dessert, used the saffron theme of the day and it was a delightful afternoon.
If you are looking for an experience of French life - please follow our lead - you will make memories for a lifetime.

***** "Perfect house! One of the most charming villages ever!"
M.K. & D.F., Brookline, MA
Just wanted to follow up to say once again thank you for sharing your wonderful house with us. As you saw from the photo I sent while I was there, David and I and 4 friends had such a great time in St Cirq Lapopie. We definitely agree that it is one of the most charming towns we have ever visited. The house was perfect, fitting us all comfortably, and giving us a chance to cook a couple of meals (thanks to the wonderful marketplace in Cahors), and relax at leisure. You have done an incredible job to make it just right for any group.
We had perfect weather, so enjoyed exploring the town (I actually commissioned a few leather bracelets made by Agnes at the top of the hill, which I will sell in my store!) and had a lovely week that we won’t soon forget.
Had David not raised his hand at that BHS (charity auction) event two years ago, we would never have known that St Cirq Lapopie exists—what a pleasure to have visited, and what a beautiful house you have restored lovingly for any visitor to enjoy.
With much appreciation and best wishes for a lovely fall....

***** "Two families, an incredible week, and we cooked all our meals."
Erica H. and Family, Boston, MA
My family and I have just returned from a magical trip in Europe which included an incredible week at Coeur du Lion in St Cirq Lapopie. My husband and I have two kids, ages 8 and 10, and we shared the very large and comfortable house with another family of three (2 adults and 1 child). I was so delighted as we drove up to the town to see that it is as beautiful as all the photos I had seen, and even more thrilled when we opened the door to the house to see that it too was as wonderful as Charles' website photos.
The house is so well appointed. The beds comfortable, bathrooms lovely and what we loved the most was the kitchen and to cook in it. We ate every meal in, and when we were out on a day trip, brought bread, cheese and meats with us for a picnic. We shopped mostly at the local markets and filled in when we needed at the store at the bottom of the hill (town called Tour de la Faure) or at larger stores on our way back from day trips like a Carrefour in Cahors. The market we loved the most was in Limogne. The butcher in that town whose store was right alongside the market had fabulous duck rillettess and more. There is wine to buy in town, but to be honest there was much less expensive and delicious Rose at the store in Tour de la Faure. Stock up on a lot and sit on the patio at the end of the day with bread and cheese. It's incredible.
We loved our stay, our walks along the river, exploring castles and walking through town. Our favorite time to wander through town was in the evening after our homemade dinners. The town gets lit up and it's quieter then during the day and you feel like you've been transported back in time.

***** "Swept away!"
Ken S. and Family, Boston, MA
Our vacation at Coeur de Lion in St Cirq was a magical experience. The description of the house and town was far exceeded by the actuality of the amazing experience.
Waking up in a medieval village surrounded by ancient preserved houses, gardens in full flower and spectacular views swept us away. Waking up each morning to a jog through the woods at the top of the hill or on the river down below, followed by fresh croissants at the village bakery and then long meandering bike rides through the beautiful countryside.
We found funky old museums, wonderful little villages on our rides, to sit and sip a coffee while admiring the life around us while chatting with the proprietor.
We visited many small villages, some with a few cottages and others climbing up the hillsides, such as Cordes Sur Ciel.
Exploring alley-ways, we found quiet cafes with views out over the countryside. Lunch in Cahors at Cotes du Sud was a surprise gourmet treat.
We dropped by a couple of local wineries and were surprised by the hospitality of the vintners.
Great place for a family reunion!

***** "So glad we stayed two weeks in this wonderful village."
R.G and W.J., Washington State
Dear Charlie and Cathy: You were right when you said we would not regret staying for two weeks. We learned so much more about the village, and the people, and just in general loved the time. A very belated thank you for the wonderful lunch we had at Auberge Sombral (do I have that right?). And we loved Lou Faure (again I am not sure about the spelling). We went there every day, for baguettes, croissants, pastries, beer, had a great dinner there, got to know the owner.
We walked the river path, climbed the hill above the village, rented bikes, spent a delightful afternoon at Chateau Cenevieres, being taken on tour by the owner, had two delicious meals created by Penni, loved the local wines (cheap!) and markets, especially Limogne, had lots of very nice picnics (cheese, duck salami, fruit, wine, bread, you know the drill).
A couple weeks after our return to the states, we were surprised to find in the mail a gift which was purchased at the "brocante" in Limogne by the friends who spent the second week with us. It was a small "antique" (1930s) lamp with shade, which I had admired. It now sits, I think quite elegantly, on the small tiger maple table under an antique mirror in the entryway of our condo in Seattle.
So, thank you again for having such an amazing place, in such a beautiful village, in such a beautiful area. We loved it.

***** Terrific time
Elizabeth & Dan D. (Harrisburg, PA)
We loved staying in Charles' house perched high in the small village. In early May beauty was everywhere - both natural and built environments - with the early stone architecture and beautiful river below with great river walks along limestone caves and formations. Especially enjoyed the amazing food one could buy at the local villages' outdoor markets and then preparing/eating it in the house. Took a great 24 mile bike ride - rental guy was very nice, very obliging - countryside so lush. Really enjoyed the house's modern bathrooms, spacious rooms and views.

***** Two wonderful, relaxing weeks…
Janice & Richard O. (Washington State)
Sitting at home in front of my computer, it is a treat to begin to recall our relaxing, even lazy, stay at Coeur de Lion and the lovely village of SCL. We were somewhat ambivalent about spending a full two weeks in one place, as we are usually quite active on our vacations, moving every 1-2 days. Therefore, the idea of hanging out in one house and one village for a fortnight was truly unique for us.
This is the perfect place for doing just that! The house is a mixture of history and modernity, which invites both comfort and ease while enjoying the experience of a medieval town. Others have spoken to how well appointed Coeur de Lion is and we would definitely agree! In addition, it is ideally located away from the hustle and bustle of the main tourist area, which is definitely crowded during the day, but is a quick, and definitely steep walk up the hill when a craving for a pastry, an ice cream, or a full meal gets the better of you. It also offers easy access to a village parking lot and even better, a nice path down to the river for some great evening walks.
Our mornings were generally slow to get started, after which we loaded our packs with a loaf of freshly baked bread, some cheese, and fruit from one of the local markets and found our way to one of the many treks in the area. The entire area of the Lot and the Dordogne are rich with history, just with the walking. We came upon Roman and Gothic ruins and saw many remnants of the cultures of the 100 Year War and the War of the Religions.
Additonally, the area is rich with geological treasures and we enjoyed touring several of the caves. The Grotto du Pech Merle is not to be missed with its 30,000 year old pictographs of an ancient people. Simply amazing!
One of the advantages of staying for two full weeks was to find ourselves, over time, truly immersed in the local culture and slowly our faces and even our names became known to the locals. We found the villagers friendly, helpful, and full of life. Late one night at closing time, we were able to borrow an extension ladder on the honor system from the restaurant up the street (that’s a whole different story and one that makes our stay even a bit more memorable) and we returned the favor by eating at the restaurant the next day, and the next. This however was hardly a chore! We also became friends with Maxim and highly recommend his bicycle renting company, Petit de Velo. Maxim is super friendly and drove us wherever we wanted to go to start our day trips. He was willing to pick us up at the end of our rides, but since he was also working at one of the local restaurants, we decided we could just muscle our way up the hills instead.
One of the days we did so, we ended up at our favorite bistro/bar for our somewhat regular late afternoon treat of a scoop of ice cream. We were hot, sweaty, and in our biking gear after a long ride. In our very broken French we ordered not one, but two scoops of our favorites, for after all they are quite small by American standards. When the waitress brought them I exclaimed how very large they were, to which she responded with a big smile, “Oui, you are regulars now!” We felt quite special and fully enjoyed our decadent scoops.
All in all, it was a delight to stay in such a beautifully restored home in a truly lovely village deep in the South of France. Over time, we began to be lulled into the daily rhythm of rural life in this unrushed countryside. A life that seems to run a whole lot slower and be inhabited by people living more in sync with the abundance of the seasons as they take pride and enjoyment in sharing their crafts and agricultural products. Their hard work to make us, as visitors to their countryside, feel nourished in body and soul was much appreciated!

***** Greatest Family Moments at Coeur De Lion
Chris & Martha H., Brookline, MA
1. Our first “WOW!” moment was when we turned the corner in our car on the bendy road and descended upon the village of St. Circq Lapopie for the first time. The majestic, arrangement of weathered limestone facades, red slated rooftops, chimneys, green tree tops and the village’s prominent church steeple with black crows circling, all protruding from high on the cliffs, a natural extension of the winding Lot river valley below.
2. Passing through the ancient gate into the heart of the medieval village; the row of stone homes and store fronts lining the narrow road, each distinguished by a heavy wood, arched or rectangle framed door, iron or brass knockers, linen curtained windows -- some brightly shuttered; a pot of freshly cut flowers or cotton sheets hanging to dry in the summer sun from a second floor balcony.
3. Waking to the music of the village birds outside our window and the sun splashing the sky with red and pink color. Curling up with a book on the window sill in the family room of Coeur de Leon, with the French window wide open, taking in the smell of freshly brewed coffee and the morning sounds of the village and the voices of people passing below.
4. Cafe au lait and chocolate or almond croissants at the village cafe at the top of the hill; wine and cheese at sunset at the stone table out back enjoying the river valley view; preparing fresh fish from Cahors market and enjoying a candlelit family dinner at home; tasting delicious duck dishes in local village restaurants. Exploring over 600 hundred years of history through all the hidden nooks and crannies of the village; climbing the massive rock to the highest point of the village; day hikes down to the river to swim, and walking or biking along the miles of river path past haystacks and farm fields. Exploring ancient caves and castles in the beauty of the surrounding French countryside.

***** "Perfect Vacation for Family of Five"
Alison and Ted (Brookline, MA)
We spent a wonderful week at Coeur de Lion in August 2014. The house is amazing-- it magically and beautifully blends the wonder of medieval ambience with every possible modern comfort and amenity. We made two visits to the supermarche in Cahors but otherwise bought all our food at local markets, in a different town each day of the week. Then we enjoyed lunch or dinner on the outdoor terrace or at the wonderful dining table. We loved being able to descent the path behind the house to the towpath, and to jog or hike in both directions. Somoe of the highlights of our week included our visit to Chateau de Cinevieres, where we met the 94 year old proprietor as we toured the property, and our discovery of the Domaine Dols winery, where we tasted several scrumptious wines (and were sad to learn that there was no shipping to the US). We also really enjoyed our visit to the Pech Merle caves and the town of Figeac, among others. We would LOVE to visit again-- the people we met everywhere were so warm and friendly and appreciative of our efforts to speak French, the countryside was beautiful, the house so comfortable and special. It was a perfect vacation!

***** "Fantastic stay for foodies, bikers, photographers, and sightseers!"
BAH (Boston, MA)
We all had a fantastic time staying at Coeur de Lion! We were an eclectic group of seven…including foodies, bikers, photographers and sightseers and we took full advantages of the village, surrounding areas and the amenities in the lovely restored home. After our various activities during the day, we all loved coming back to the house just to relax comparing notes on our day before enjoying our meals together whether “at home” or trying the local restaurants.
So many terrific adventures including
· trips to the local markets (Cahors and the smaller Limogne) where we purchased local produce, fish, pates and cheeses. Because one of our crew is a celebrated chef, we cooked a few fabulous meals together…the open layout of the common area is perfect with the great kitchen, beautiful light streaming into the room and a nice big table to enjoy our meal replete with the local wines (and Fenelon apertifs).
· going to the Painted Caves at Grotto du Pech Merle, the Gates of Hell and Rocamadour (and of course, eating treats along the way)
· visiting the lovely Château de Cénevières (and the ride there is spectacular)
· exploring the challenging local winding roads either by bike or car just stopping along the way to pick flowers, buying great pastries and yes, more wine
· eating at the local restaurants….Our favorite was the one right up the street from the house…we ate duck everyway imaginable- foie gras, riclettes, roasted, grilled, etc. Loved the walnuts, cheeses and pastries!
· walking along the river with the beautiful limestone carvings, capped by a fun swim in the river….two of us also went kayaking
· just enjoying walking through the village, stopping in at the lovely boutiques.. we really liked the local artisans then stopping for a drink
· watching the sun go down (there are amazing views of the valley right outside the lower level door of the house) plus on the top of the hill behind the church
I was staying in the downstairs bedroom that has a door directly to the outside when I heard a lot of commotion from the trekkers who come up the hill from the river to explore St. Cirque…the rest of the crew came outside to see what was up. A pack mule (his name was snoopy) carries their gear and the poor little guy got spooked when he had to climb a few stairs…everyone coaxed and prodded him to finally he made it to the cheers of all…you never know when to expect the unexpected!
I had never been in that part of France and just loved the area and the history…coupled by staying in such a beautiful welcoming home (we loved the décor, modern amenities and the appointments). At night, when the tourists left, we had the village all to ourselves, which makes the location even more special... It truly was a great week and I highly recommend a stay at Couer de Lion…. I hope to go back there again in the future!

***** "Trip of a lifetime!"
Jeff & Dana (Boston, MA)
As for your home and the region, I cannot say enough. The house was perfect (we were the ones that had problems with the kitchen sink, handled quickly and professionally despite the distance etc, thank you!). The home is gorgeous and fully equipped with all we needed. The town is beyond adorable. We spent every morning and evening with a stroll around town. We felt welcomed and even a bit like a local after just a week. Our favorite restaurant was restaurant L'Oustal. The shop owners were delightful. The views!!! All amazing.
Each day we could set out on foot to explore the region. Jeff navigated us with some sort of hiking app. Two days stand out in particular although they were all interesting, picturesque and loads of fun. In Bouzie, we dined at Les Deux Valles and then went caving. None of us have ever done anything like that before. It was definitely way out of my comfort zone, yet magnificent and exciting while frightening and challenging at the same time.
Another day we hiked to a restaurant called La Terrace Romantiqe in Calvignac. The views were lovely and we were the only diners. The owner prepared us a lovely lunch. It was a great afternoon. We also hiked through Cenevieres, visited Cahors (loved the farmers market!)!, and went to the winery (Chateau de Haute-Serre- winery eh, but fantastic lunch!) Overall. It was a trip of a lifetime. What a special home!

***** "Enchanted Castle in a Magical Village"
Carla H. (Rochester, MN)
This was my third time staying in this wonderful village. The newly renovated Coeur de Lion was my first choice as it was highly recommended by friends and rental owners in the area. It was spectacular. I could tell the minute I walked in that the interior design was done by Nerida DeJong, my favorite artist. It has the feel of old world charm with all desired modern comforts.
(We quickly became owners of nespresso machines upon returning home.)
There were just three of us staying in this huge estate, but felt it to be both warm and cozy due to the layout. As for location, what can I say...it is located in the most aesthetically pleasing little village in all the world.

***** "Wonderful House in a Stunningly Beautiful Village"
David P. (Exeter, NH)
Our one-week stay at Coeur de Lion in St. Cirq Lapopie was truly extraordinary. The house is magnificent. It is spacious and comfortable, with the feel of a medieval dwelling but with first-rate contemporary appliances and tasteful furnishings. The beds are extraordinarily comfortable; the bathrooms are modern with fantastic showers and soaking tubs; and there are many other small but wonderful touches. The lower level, second floor and third floor each have sleeping areas that are quiet, private and roomy. The first floor has a great kitchen and large dining and sitting areas. The house was perfect for our three couples, but it could accommodate more people and would be luxurious for a couple or small family.
The village is more stunning and unique than we had imagined. On our daily walks to the local restaurants and shops, we repeatedly stopped to just take in the medieval feel and natural beauty. Long walks along the Lot River under majestic limestone cliffs were a highlight. The neighboring town of Tour de Faure (about a 20 minute walk) has a small market and a good bakery. People in the restaurants and shops are friendly and the prices are reasonable.
Because we love to walk and prefer public transportation, we decided not to rent a car. We recommend this for people who are enthusiastic walkers. The roads are narrow and the local drivers are assertive, and this reinforced our decision to leave the driving to others. We took a restful 5-hour train ride from Paris to Cahors. We arranged in advance (by internet) to be met at the train by Philippe Merle taxi (based in Tour de Faure), which has a regular sedan and a larger van that accommodates 6 or 7 passengers. The cost for 5 travelers from Cahors to St. Cirq was 60 Euros. We also took a taxi to see the wonderful 15,000 year-old cave paintings at Pech Merle (about a 15 minute ride). The driver dropped us off and picked us up—prompt, polite and helpful. We traveled by bus from Tour de Faure to Cahors (an easy trip) to see the famous ancient bridge and Henri Martin museum, and to visit the fantastic weekly outdoor market. But most of our time was spent in the village, soaking up the local culture, sampling the local wine and beer, and enjoying the house and the views.
Coeur de Lion provided the perfect setting for a memorable family vacation—We just loved it!

***** "HIGHLY RECOMMENDED"

The stay in your home in St-Cirq-Lapopie was the highlight of our vacation. We have used VRBO frequently in the US, Italy and France over the last 6 years and stayed in some wonderful homes, but we all agree, your home is our favorite! Not only is it situated in a lovely medieval village with beauty and history at every turn, the interior of the home was beautifully completed. The layout of the floor plan, the quality finishes, the comfortable and charming interior design, all came together to make this a perfect vacation home. I can’t really say enough about the comfort, i.e. linen sheets; plenty of hot water (with great water pressure) for three couples; great appliances; lovely furnishings, comfortable beds. The list goes on and on. The pictures actually don’t do your home justice, which isn’t always the case!
Going to markets and preparing dinners together is something we enjoy doing, and your kitchen was a perfect set-up for a lot of cooks in the kitchen.
The Patisserie across from the tourism office has the best coffee and pastries of anywhere we visited over almost 3 weeks. A dinner we had in a lovely restaurant in the village was also one of our favorites. We loved exploring the village, rode bicycles by the Lot River, visited chateaus, and experienced the beautiful French countryside.
I would HIGHLY recommend your home for a vacation destination.
Recommended for: Romantic getaway, adventure seekers, families with young children, sightseeing, girls getaway, families with teenagers, age 55+.

***** "The best vacation ever..."
A.M.L. (Seattle, WA)
I had the great fortune to stay in Coeur de Lion in October 2013. I also have a house in the village, but I had been long to live in and experience this new renovation. The house is magnificent and the location is unparalleled for beauty and medieval charm. The owner has brought it back from a ruin to a beautiful, tasteful home with a lot of “wow”. Coeur de Lion shows thoughtful attention to the details of its ancient heritage while imbedding all the modern comforts.
I am particular about vacation houses. I want to feel at home, I want to feel I've discovered something very special, and I want to feel like the owner cares about my comfort and enjoyment. Sleeping in the king-size bed was a dream. The bathrooms are a welcome luxury for the weary traveler – even heated towel racks! The Nespresso machine in the kitchen provides a lovely crema to top a delicious cup of coffee. The kitchen provides the most sophisticated cooks with all the tools and features for gourmet cooking. I would love to come back for the cooking classes they plan to offer (let me know!).
The location in the village is excellent. With a simple walk to the top of the village through 14th-15th c. France, you can find morning croissants or go out for dinner. There are many wonderful restaurants within a few blocks. The regional food abounds with rich flavors of duck, foie gras, truffles, walnuts and local cheeses. Local markets are a shopper’s paradise for anything from regional Malbec wines to local, fresh organic produce to cook a stellar meal at home.
Charles and Cathy are hosts who know how to exceed expectations. Many guests want support for planning logistics, as well as access to information and advice on activities and experiences that only an insider knows. They provide all that and more. I cannot think of any improvements to suggest. It's just a stroll from my own house; but I'll want to stay there again!

From D.C.L.M. (Massachusetts) October, 2013:
We stayed at Coeur de Lion for one week and wish we could have stayed there a year. The house was so comfortable and fun to be in (fabulous kitchen, great bedrooms, elegant but very homey) that at times we didn't want to go out. But you have to go out. The village is a small miracle of medieval beauty-- some touristy shops, for sure, but some wonderful shops, excellent studios (visit Nerida de Jong), and very fine restaurants.
The tourists come and go, but when you live here (even for only a week), you feel like the town is yours. There's hardly any automobile traffic, so kids can wander the streets quite safely-- and you can't get lost, really.
We commend the owner's for creating such a great house, and for locating it in one of the most beautiful places in the world. What a treat. Thank you, thank you.

From E.M. (Vermont) April 2013:
Just a note to tell you that we looked in on the renovations during the week we stayed in St. Cirq Lapopie this past April, and the work looked fantastic. We took a tour and we all agreed: the house is ideal in size, and ideally located. The open living space as you enter through that old oak door is beautiful-- not only good light and great views, but a warm, classy, AND comfortable place to hang out with cocktails or beer and/or crackers and chèvre, for good conversations about the days events. And, of course, we know something about the days events! Even in the first part of April, the village and the valley are gorgeous. We walked all over the countryside, rode bicycles along the river, and visited neighboring markets. We didn't even get to the caves (next time, for sure). And we found some favorite restaurants in town, as well as the new boulangerie which we visited many mornings, just up the street. Croissants and pain au chocolat to equal the best of Paris, in our humble opinions.
We really wished we could have stayed in Coeur de Lion-- it is just a marvelous space, and it is clear that the renovation work is of a high order. Thank you for telling us about St. Cirq Lapopie, motivating us to visit (we are really glad we didn't just grab the usual country house with a pool-- instead, we had a real French experience). And next time, and there will be a next time, we will be staying at your house. Vive Coeur de Lion!
