Please Note: Our typical guests are Americans and Canadians who find us through word of mouth, charity events, friends, colleagues, and alumni. But travel to France was almost nonexistent in 2020 and 2021. However, we did have some European guests whose reviews we've included below. Here is a sampling of reviews through the years.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Magique!
Cyrille S. (and family), France

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Wonderful time, beautiful village, tons of things to do...
Gertjan N. & Family, Kingdom of the Netherlands
We had a wonderful time in SCL, a beautiful village and tons of things to do. In these times with Corona it is a bit strange though. Masks are obligatory during 10.00 and 18.00 and although advised, social distancing seems like a foreign concept. Anyway, on Sunday we took your advice and went to the market in Limogne. Absolutely lovely with lots of local products. We also paid a small visit to the supermarket there for beverages and non-food items.
Then on Monday we visited the caves. Very impressive, like travelling back in time. Tuesday, like every other day, started with going to the bakery in TdF and then we rented two pedalo's at the beach by the river. We made our way upstream and then back again with lots of intermittent swimming. Great fun.
On Wednesday we went to Cahors, a beautiful old city with a stunning view on the Lot from the bridge. We visited the brocante market and the food market and got all kinds of goodies. Thursday was the hottest day of the week, but that was not apparent yet when I made reservations for the ziplining trail 2 weeks earlier... So ziplining was great but hot.
The next day we returned to Bouzies for canoeing, we did a small trip from Cabrerets to the Kalapca base and stopped for swimming and jumping off large rocks - or at least the kids did :)
All in all we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The house is really, really nice, the only thing we found missing were curtains in the rooms on the top floor. [Early sunlight, but no problem with privacy.\ As you advised us, each evening in the upstairs lounge with the windows thrown wide open, we had a bat visiting us and after a couple of rounds he (or she) made their way out the window again. Very interesting creatures. [Not only protected in France, but the reason there are virtually no mosquitoes in the village!\
Thank you for a wonderful experience.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Excellent restaurants, wines, and farmers markets...
Ted & Linda F., Seattle, WA
Thank you so much for allowing us to stay in your lovely 'maison' during our visit to the beautiful, historical, village of St. Cirq Lapopie. The 8 of us sleep so comfortably in your home, with beds to spare!
Your home’s location in the village made it so easy for us to walk the winding cobblestone paths to many of the excellent local restaurants, the wine shop, and all the quaint little stores. The local foods and wines from the Lot Valley were available to us in the village restaurants, and at the many farmers markets in nearby villages that we so enjoyed frequenting.
Thank you for suggesting the talented chef from the village who made and delivered dinners to us. She made such mouthwatering, multi course dinners made from locally grown and raised food. She always delivered it hot and ready to eat! Every single course of our dinners was magnificent. And, her price was so reasonable.
The Pech Merle cave paintings were one of the most amazing sites we have EVER, EVER SEEN! To think that the paintings on the cave walls were 29,000 years old is almost beyond belief. I will never forget that tour!
Again, thank you for sharing your incredible home with us.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Stay two weeks, if you can!
John S., Washington State
St. Cirq Lapopie and the region around it are just amazing. They stimulate the mind, senses and spirit. The village is a historic set-piece, high on sandstone cliffs over a river valley, dotted with cute shops, fantastic restaurants and welcoming people.
The Coeur de Lion complements the experience with its authentic restoration. The house is spacious and elegant with beautiful exposed wood beams and staircase. We had 8 active people on our visit and there was plenty of room.
My best moments were when we finally arrived and saw what and where we were. It was a “just pinch me moment”. The next morning, we went to the street market in Limogne and had a lunch that was exceptional.
The owner’s recommendation and “user-guide” house book provided tons of information. Everything involved in coordinating schedules, etc. was a delight. I wish we had more time there to do some more extensive day trips. The cathedral in Albi and Toulouse-Lautrec museum are worthy of the drive. Stay two weeks if you can.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Enchanting, Gorgeous, One-of-a-Kind Experience
Mia C. and Family, Boston, MA
We are now back in Boston and already waxing nostalgic about our wonderful time in France. Our experience in Saint-Cirq-Lapopie far exceeded our expectations. The Coeur de Lion website describes an enchanting vacation experience, but one has to see the gorgeous house and location to truly understand the possibilities.
We spent our days going to open-air markets, kayaking down the Célé River, sailing down the Lot River and having our children open and shut the locks that mark its winding path, taking breathtaking family photos at a lookout point that overlooks the valley, hiking down gorgeous paths through and next to huge rock formations, visiting a local chateau, learning about the village's history, and most importantly, eating great food and hanging out on the private terrace of the house.
The weather in mid-August was picture perfect and the neighbors and shopkeepers in the village were absolutely lovely. If you are looking for a vacation that combines natural beauty, history, charm, outdoor activities, and all the desired amenities, then this place is for you. It is a one of a kind experience!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Great Experience!
Kevin D., (and family), France
Our family had a great experience. The town and house are beautiful. The property is amazing and right in the middle of town makes for an easy starting point to visit the city. There are many restaurants and shops within walking distance. The views are out of this world. The property was very clean and well kept. The owner was very friendly and provided us with great instructions. We highly recommend to all!!!!!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Fabulous two weeks in May
Emily, Robin, Jean, Helen, & Danielle, Minneapolis, MN
All five of us had the vacation of a lifetime and we have all trotted the globe a bit.
Regarding the new boulangerie at the top of the village, I walked in by chance the day before we left and bought cheese and bread, I enjoyed a nice conversation with the owner and noted how convenient it was to get bread and cheese there without having to cross the bridge to go to Isabelle"s which we did many times.
We definitely boosted the economy of the village between the five of us; including visits to Christine's, a leather shop which makes custom belts and bracelets, the stained glass shop by the post office, the leather shop just up from Christine's and many, many more shops. Loved the Table du Producteur and we said "hello" from you.
In fact, we always mentioned that we were staying at Coeur du Lion and your name. Expressions of smiling recognition always followed!
Our experience with Penni and her meal was superb!
We all thought that having Penni several days into our vacation was a nice idea, as at that point, all jet lag had vanished and we were refreshed and able to enjoy the dinner. It was an easy walk up to La Gourmand to pick up quiches and salads for everyone on their first night. It is situated on the service road for cars and buses, across from the road into the village that accesses Le Cantou. As it turned out we stopped there for their excellent coffees and lunches many times.
The biking ended up being superb and I found some additional routes that I could send to you to incorporate into your existing suggestions. We rode just about every day and had two sets of matching jerseys so we were quite a sight!
The restaurant L'Oustal was excellent. Having a pescatarian in our group, the fish was excellent as was the beef. We ate there twice.
Regarding wineries, we went to Lagrezette in Caillac. We scheduled a tour in English which was followed by wine tasting. We also happened upon La Caminade in Parnac and had a wonderful wine tasting experience there.
A rainy day walk along Le Chemin de Halage, ending up in Bouzie and then circling back to the top of St. Cirq. Lapopie on a road in Bouzie directing us to St. Cirq Lapopie, was a nice way to get some exercise.
Our group is very active and for my part, having biked all over France, the Lot and Cele river valleys and their environs, are top on my list at this point!
After each adventure, we just could not wait to get back to the house which we just fell in love with from the very outset! We watched your renovation video together and frankly I had tears in my eyes as it all unfolded!
Not to forget our favorite gathering spot at the end of the day for an aperitif and for reflections on our day, was your lovely furnished terrace garden! It seemed to inspire us and to put into perspective the things that matter in life.
Thank you for an amazing vacation!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ For a Birthday Reunion, A Gem of a Vacation
Mara and Hallie K., Brookline, MA
For my 60th birthday, I wanted to plan “an exciting, yet relaxed adventure” with six of my girlfriends. The Coeur de Lion house in Saint Cirq Lapopie fit the bill perfectly. Located in a charming, medieval town in Southern France, the house is beautifully decorated, impeccably maintained, and full of modern conveniences, while offering period touches, comfortable furnishings, and beautiful vistas from every room, including the bathroom! The town of Saint Cirq Lapopie is a gem, with lots of narrow, meandering streets to explore, and nestled in a landscape of incredible beauty. We went on many enchanting adventures, all the while knowing we had a magnificent and welcoming place to return to at the end of the day. A one-of-a-kind spot for a one-of-a-kind trip. I highly recommend it with absolutely no reservations. You will love it!
P.S. For those of you who like ice cream, there’s a restaurant on the road to Pech Merle with extraordinarily delicious offerings. You can’t go wrong.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Live like a local in the most beautiful village in France!
Tracey Y. (and family), North Carolina
My husband and I have been renting vacation homes for years and this is the most incredible home by far! Charlie, the host and homeowner has managed at create an experience of staying in a historic home with the finest bathrooms, kitchens and furnishings. No expense was spared in the house, our combined group of seven had room to spare. Not only is the house amazing but the village of Saint Cirq Lapopie is breathtaking. I found myself taking photos of the village constantly! Just steps out the door are amazing restaurants, cute shops and art exhibitions. In the village nearby we rented mountain bikes for the teenagers and took a family kayak journey at the host’s recommendation. This host goes above and beyond and ensuring the guests are comfortable and happy. Every day he sent recommendations for dinners out, markets and fun things to do.
One thing future renters should know, this is truly a medieval village, built with a castle on the top of a hill, with some relatively steep inclines toward the top of the village. [Owner's Note: From the private owner's parking lot, you walk up a dozen stone steps, then through the Ancient Gate, on a relatively flat stretch of street that takes you to the house. You can also drive your car up to the house to unload luggage, shopping, etc.\ If you are ok with the inclines, you will be treated to amazing views across the village and valley below. You can also walk down to the beach and enjoy a cooling swim in the river. Saint Cirq Gormande is worth the walk up for the amazing apple tart, all the restaurants we tried served amazing dishes with duck as the regional specialty. There is nothing we would trade out from the vacation including the incline. I can't say enough times how amazing the views are from every window of the house and every location in the village.
This house offers everything you can ask for in an immersive experience. Our two family’s with three teens had more than enough to do for everyone. Truly incredible, highest recommendation.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Our Favorite Place in France.
K. H-M family, Wellesley, Massachusetts
We’re back from France and of course missing it very much. St Cirq Lapopie was clearly our favorite place without a doubt. So magical. Despite the heat, we carried on and although we had less energy to do all that we wanted, we took extra time to sip wine as you suggested and I made several walks on flat ground to the bakery in Tour-de-Faure for bread, croissants and chocolatines. I made a connection with the very nice lady there and she helped me some with my french! We made a point of speaking and writing in french as much as we could. My husband and I tasted and purchased wine from Musee de Vin which was so fun. We all roamed with our cameras at various times of the day and night. La Roue was our favorite restaurant; we went there 3 times for dinner! The kind folks got used to my evening phone call about asking for a reservation (in french) and never completely understanding their response; we showed up and there was always a table waiting for us. The owner made a point of coming to talk with us and asked us how we heard about the restaurant; I let then know that you did.
Our favorite market was Limogne-en-Quercy; the town looked adorable and I only wish I took time to explore it. (This was our first outing/market and I was ready to head back “home” after getting our purchases.) Next time! Some of the group went to the cave and loved it. Some went swimming and some hiked the tow path along the limestone cliffs; so beautiful. Most of us got to see the medieval bridge in Cahors when we were there for the market or when picking up members of our group at the train station. Every time I tried to read, I ended up just staring outside. I especially love the little window by the chair in the TV room. My husband liked the different ways the stone was done underneath the windows in the main bedroom.
Thank you so much for the opportunity to experience your house and village. We are so grateful. We will cherish our memories and look forward to the time that we return to make more.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A Vacation that Dreams Are Made of.
A.R. & L.S., Massachusetts
It was so fantastic! I can't think of a single thing we wanted for. Everything was perfect. The terrace was so fun and we soaked up many wonderful hours of shaded chatter and laughter over local wines and cheese. We did have a bat visit (bats in France are not the rabies-prone American type; in fact, they are protected by French law!) Of course, as soon as he came downstairs and heard the ruckus, he fled to safety. We fondly named him Jean Claude von Bat. It is a home/village/vacation that dreams are made of. Thank you!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Oh, What a Lovely Three Weeks We Had!
B. & A-J O. & Family, East Bay,California
In the air back home, swiping through the holiday photos and reminiscing. Oh, what a lovely time we had. Memories linger in my heart of St Cirq Lapopie, a friendly, kind, romantic, scenic place enjoyed by all.
My hopes for a meaningful family celebration of Bob's birthday succeeded beyond expectations.
Looking back, it was the simplest daily events that provided us lasting memories.
Our favorite pastime was walking to Bouziès along the Chemin de Halage, one time extending the walk over the top of the mountain, ending with homemade Tiramisu at Restaurant Les Falaises.
Buying homemade yogurt after watching the goats being milked at La Ferme de Létou.
Buying croissants and baguettes at the bakery in Tour de Faure.
Taking guests to admire Latoulzanie homes and views.
Cheap cup of coffee at Chez Namphaise at Caniac du Causse.
A boat ride on the La Crousière down the Lot River.
On cold days, sitting by the fire. On warm days our favorite spot was the terrace.
We also relished witnessing spring blooming, daily new wildflowers, wisteria adorning house façades, leaves unfolding and getting covered by caterpillars on our walks.
Outside of wine tasting, visiting other towns, we highly recommend Jardin Marqueyssac, a beautifully manicured boxwood garden (very suitable too for families with children). It's an oasis above touristy La Rogue Gageac if you have not been.
L'Oustal was our favorite restaurant, followed by Le Cantou.
Thank you for finding a slot in your calendar for us to explore and enjoy your home.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A Wonderful Week.
D.K., Martha's Vineyard
We had a wonderful stay at Coeur de Lion. St Cirq Lapopie is an amazingly beautiful place. We basically stayed close to home, walking and exploring nearby. We enjoyed Penni's meals twice. L'Oustal was our favorite local restaurant. The set up of the house was very comfortable for three couples. We enjoyed picnics at your outside terrace. We had great weather. Thank you!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Three weeks in your amazing place!
Paul & Evelin B., New York
Thank you again for making your amazing place available to us - we have all looked at the video of the renovation again. It means more now that we have been here. Among the many highlights: When your neighbor, Pat, stopped by to bring us some fresh homemade scones. She would not accept any payment and assured us that she always does that for "Charlie's guests." This morning we tasted the best scones, still warmish from the oven, complete with cream and a plate of fragrant strawberries.
We also enjoyed the Cahors and Limogne markets where our daughter, the chef-turned-translator, went wild over the quantity and size of mushrooms. She made Beef Bourgogne for us one night. (Each of us agree to author one meal.) One night we ordered one of Penni's dinners. Aside from eating and drinking we have visited every shop in town, even gone to the beach, admired many churches (including the interesting painted Chagall-like windows at the cathedral in Cahors.
Oh, yes, my wardrobe has a bit more panache after visiting Christine atelier. Our amazing 4 1/2 year old, Zoe, has taught us all that old time favorite, Dominoes. After three weeks, we all left, off in different directions, taking with us happy memories.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A fabulous time!
K.G., Massachusetts
Thanks so much for donating a week at Coeur de Lion to the New England Zoo and for the opportunity for us to bid and win the week we just spent there. We had a fabulous time! We did the market at Cahors and the vineyards, a few day trips to Carcassonne and Albi. We visited Pech Merle, ate at Le Cantou. The weather was terrific, your neighbors are delightful and so helpful and welcoming. Penni and her incredible cooking were a godsend, and we enjoyed so many lovely outings outdoors, on your terrasse, and in the many places to picnic along the gorgeous Cele river. THANK YOU.

Our family, including my husband, mother, daughter, her boyfriend, and our college aged son and three of his friends from the states and UK, just finished our week-long stay at your beautiful, home. To say we enjoyed ourselves would be an understatement!
Several of us started our trip in Paris and then made the easy, six hour drive to the house in a rental we picked up in the city. Our daughter came by way of Barcelona and also rented a car from the Barcelona airport. Having a car while staying at the house was great for seeing the sites in the region.
Our typical day started with coffee outside on the terrace, followed by one of the many things to do in the area. We explored the quaint shops and delicious restaurants in the village, went swimming and kayaking at the river, played frisbee at the river, explored Pech Merle (too cool for words), visited Cahors, visited several markets where we purchased fresh produce, cheese and wine, went on endless walks through the village and on the trails, read in open windows and outside on the terrace, played UNO, Scabble, and Yahtzee, and drank delicious local wines...all...day...long. We also went to dinner twice in town, but preferred whipping up meals in the gourmet kitchen. We also met "new friends" on the terrace picnic table (practically every evening) and finished the day with more wine under the stars! We were never bored!
The house was big enough for all nine of us to have our own private spaces, and the open floor plan, kitchen-dining-room-living-room, accommodated us in the evening for dinner followed by cards or board games.
On the last night in the village, the annual Bastille Day festival took place with an incredible DJ and light show, plus yet another excuse to drink more local wine and beer. Our group ranging in age from 21 to 72 had such a great time that we have already planned our next visit in 2019! The next time we will return with our daughter, her boyfriend and our son, but will bring two new couples with us, too.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★Three weeks, three generations, fabulous trip!
Pamela & Steven W., Pasadena, CA
We just spent three weeks in this wonderful house, and loved every minute! There were seven of us -- three generations -- including two children ages five and 2 1/2. (It's important that young children be stair-safe in this house, since there are quite a few stairs.) The 14th-century house itself is beautifully-restored and very very comfortable. There's a great kitchen stocked with absolutely everything our two master-chefs needed; the beds are comfortable; there are several bathrooms with good showers and a couple of soaking tubs as well; two "living rooms" where evening hang-outs happened. The windows, the views....I could go on and on.....
St-Cirq-Lapopie is a medieval cliff-village quite beyond description. Your first view just kind of takes your breath away! It was a delightful village to wander, and we ate at most of the restaurants that Charlie recommended. (Ice cream at Bar LaPopie is indeed special!)
Also had a couple of wonderful meals in nearby towns: La Roue in Cabrerets, and the fabulous trout at a restaurant in Vers called La Truite Doree (located at the old hotel). We also enjoyed an evening at l'Olio just across the river in Tour de Faure -- very good pizza, great views of St Cirq up on the cliff, and a nice spot for the kids to run around while we enjoyed the cool evening!
We loved the Sunday morning market in Limogne, and visited a couple of brocantes (flea markets) on Sunday mornings. And of course the market in Cahors.
Great day-trip was a drive up to Figeac, taking the Lot River route on the way up, and the Cele River route on the way back -- such beautiful countryside, small beautiful stone villages, etc. And on the Cele River road, there's a wonderful quirky art installation a few minutes outside of Cabrerets just beyond the tunnel (if you are headed NE. Coming back from Figeac, it was just before the tunnel.). The artist has spent 40 years creating wonderful art constructions in his house at the base of the cliff, and calls it something like the "Museum of the Unusual" (in French, of course). He's an unusual guy -- kind of hermit-like -- and very particular about "no photos" unless you pay the 2 or 3 Euro entrance fee. (So I wouldn't advise a quick roadside photo-snap!) But it's worth it -- the collection is much more extensive than you realize, once you get inside. He's a talented artist (if you like folk art) and has a great (and irreverent) sense of humor in his art.
We rented our own 7-person boat for a few hours in Bouzies and cruised the Lot River. It was great fun to navigate the locks on the river!
We visited the Chateau de Ceneviere nearby -- a real highlight.
One special treat was a full day in the Dordogne region (around Les Eyzies) with a guide, visiting pre-historic cave art with a woman who wrote the book (literally. Book ahead! Her contact info is christine.desdemaines@gmail.com. She speaks perfect English and is incredibly knowledgable. Not inexpensive, but a once-in-a-lifetime experience.) We also visited the caves nearby St Cirq Lapopie -- Pech Merle. The caves themselves are very spectacular, but after our experience with Christine, the public group tour was somewhat disappointing if it's the art you are interested in, since the guide spent very little time actually highlighting the art.)
We swam. We biked. We ate al fresco on our private terrace, enjoying the evening breezes coming up the valley. I could go on and on.....It was a fabulous trip!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★The most amazing week ever!
J.B. and B.T., Coronado, CA
Five of us recently spent a week in Saint Cirq Lapopie. It was truly magical, thanks in part to staying in the magnificent Coeur de Lion. Beautifully restored and decorated, and equipped with every modern comfort and convenience, it provided us with the perfect location from which to venture out every day to explore the gorgeous Lot and Dordogne regions.
Highlights included visiting Château des Milandes (former residence of Josephine Baker), Pech Merle (one of the few prehistoric cave painting sites in France that remains open to the general public), and Château de Cénevières (the current owners give a tour of this XIII century castle and fortress perched above the Lot River). We also shopped in nearby markets and drove around the gorgeous countryside to picturesque villages.
We fell in love with Saint Cirq Lapopie, with its spectacular views, friendly residents, charming shopkeepers, and outstanding restaurants. (Oh, the duck, fois gras and truffles!) We are fairly well-traveled, and Saint Cirq has become a new favorite. We were sad to leave this "dream house, mythic village" after one week, but will definitely return. Thank you, Charlie and Cathy, for the opportunity to experience a little slice of heaven.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★This home and village are amazing!
Diane McG., Milton, MA
We went for a family vacation ( two kids: 9 and 6, and four adults) in France this summer. While our trip started with Paris, St. Cirq Lapopie was the perfect complement to four days in the City.
The scenery in St Cirq is breathtaking; nothing like we have ever seen; the Medieval Village, the shear cliffs, the meandering Lot River. The house (Coeur de Lion) is beautiful, very comfortable and conveniently located in the Village. The kitchen is very well appointed; fantastic for cooking and an evening at home. The five bedrooms provided everything we needed and expected. The owner is extremely helpful (provided lots of suggestions and very prompt in responding to any inquiries). The location allows for an easy walk to the shops, restaurants and the Lot River.
The Village has an array of unique and interesting shops from the small woodworking shop (with a kind older man and his dog) to the Cooking shop near the top of the hill. The restaurants were fabulous. Each restaurant we went to was great – amazing duck and fantastic wine! The prices were much more reasonable than Paris with wonderful food and a much more relaxed atmosphere. All of the people we encountered in this lovely town were kind and patient to us with our limited knowledge of French!
In Saint Cirq, there is a never-ending list of options: cave drawings (Peche Merle), canoeing (kalapca), swimming, biking, horseback riding, castles, vineyards. You could literally stay for weeks. We are so grateful to have had the opportunity to experience St Cirq Lapopie and Coeur Lion.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★Coeur de Lion-- Wow. Just wow!
Bob and Marilyn M., Seattle, WA
The house, the village, pure magic. We spent two weeks in this enchanted place. The first was a family reunion with ages ranging from 5 to 75. The house was lovely and spacious with plenty of bedrooms, plenty of baths, and room in the kitchen for everyone to participate in joyous meal preparation, which was especially fun after a morning at the Cahors market.
Some in our group rented bikes and peddled all over the area while others canoed down the river and swam at the beach. We all visited painted caves. The village itself had delicious croissants, terrific ice cream, and several lovely restaurants. And we all lay out on the grass one special night to watch the Perseid meteor shower, with the children oohing and aahing like it was a fireworks display.
The second week the two of us stayed on by ourselves. Although the house was large enough for our family it was also surprisingly cozy for two. We visited nearby villages, took a boat ride on the river, and made some beautiful photographs in morning and evening light. It was more restful but still magic. A very special and memorable time in a very beautiful place.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★A Wonderful Place to Have A Most Enchanting Vacation
Bill A. and Kathy L., Kendall Park, NY
My husband and I wanted a deeper experience of France than we’d had on any of our earlier trips - we wanted to live like locals. To achieve that dream we sought a unique and idyllic setting in the south of France. Our extensive research revealed Coeur de Lion, a beautiful 13th century house in the historic perched village of St. Cirq Lapopie, high above the River Lot. We later learned that St. Cirq Lapopie has officially been designated as one of the most beautiful villages in France.
The owner created Coeur de Lion from the remnants of a 13th Century stone structure on the tiny street which winds it's way uphill from the arch, the only remaining remnant of the medieval fortress wall, to the top of the village, high above the river. The views from the house are stunning, either overlooking the hillside and the Lot river or down the winding street to the ancient gate.
As enchanting as St. Cirq Lapopie is, it is also ideally located for exploring the whole Lot Valley and neighboring areas that are rife with beautiful chateaux, other perched villages, castles, scenic overlooks, historic churches, cathedrals. We visited Rocamadour, Conques, Belcastel, Albi, Lacapelle Livron, Soulliac, Sarlat, Cahors, Peche Merle, an elaborate and fascinating grotto, and travelled the wine road of Cahors.
We used the chef's kitchen to make wonderful meals for ourselves and visitors. And when we didn't feel like cooking, we dined in style at the restaurants in St. Cirq Lapopie and the surrounding area. The food and wine in the Lot valley is varied and excellent. Just one story - we drove to Cajarc to attend the Festival de Safran and had a lovely lunch at L'Allee de Vigne. Each course of the four course lunch in this charming restaurant, including dessert, used the saffron theme of the day and it was a delightful afternoon.
If you are looking for an experience of French life - please follow our lead - you will make memories for a lifetime.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "Perfect house! One of the most charming villages ever!"
M.K. & D.F., Brookline, MA
Just wanted to follow up to say once again thank you for sharing your wonderful house with us. As you saw from the photo I sent while I was there, David and I and 4 friends had such a great time in St Cirq Lapopie. We definitely agree that it is one of the most charming towns we have ever visited. The house was perfect, fitting us all comfortably, and giving us a chance to cook a couple of meals (thanks to the wonderful marketplace in Cahors), and relax at leisure. You have done an incredible job to make it just right for any group.
We had perfect weather, so enjoyed exploring the town (I actually commissioned a few leather bracelets made by Agnes at the top of the hill, which I will sell in my store!) and had a lovely week that we won’t soon forget.
Had David not raised his hand at that BHS (charity auction) event two years ago, we would never have known that St Cirq Lapopie exists—what a pleasure to have visited, and what a beautiful house you have restored lovingly for any visitor to enjoy.
With much appreciation and best wishes for a lovely fall....

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "Two families, an incredible week we cooked all our meals."
Erica H. and Family, Boston, MA
My family and I have just returned from a magical trip in Europe which included an incredible week at Coeur du Lion in St Cirq Lapopie. My husband and I have two kids, ages 8 and 10, and we shared the very large and comfortable house with another family of three (2 adults and 1 child). I was so delighted as we drove up to the town to see that it is as beautiful as all the photos I had seen, and even more thrilled when we opened the door to the house to see that it too was as wonderful as Charles' website photos.
The house is so well appointed. The beds comfortable, bathrooms lovely and what we loved the most was the kitchen and to cook in it. We ate every meal in, and when we were out on a day trip, brought bread, cheese and meats with us for a picnic. We shopped mostly at the local markets and filled in when we needed at the store at the bottom of the hill (town called Tour de la Faure) or at larger stores on our way back from day trips like a Carrefour in Cahors. The market we loved the most was in Limogne. The butcher in that town whose store was right alongside the market had fabulous duck rillettess and more. There is wine to buy in town, but to be honest there was much less expensive and delicious Rose at the store in Tour de la Faure. Stock up on a lot and sit on the patio at the end of the day with bread and cheese. It's incredible.
We loved our stay, our walks along the river, exploring castles and walking through town. Our favorite time to wander through town was in the evening after our homemade dinners. The town gets lit up and it's quieter then during the day and you feel like you've been transported back in time.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "Swept away!"
Ken S. and Family, Boston, MA
Our vacation at Coeur de Lion in St Cirq was a magical experience. The description of the house and town was far exceeded by the actuality of the amazing experience.
Waking up in a medieval village surrounded by ancient preserved houses, gardens in full flower and spectacular views swept us away. Waking up each morning to a jog through the woods at the top of the hill or on the river down below, followed by fresh croissants at the village bakery and then long meandering bike rides through the beautiful countryside.
We found funky old museums, wonderful little villages on our rides, to sit and sip a coffee while admiring the life around us while chatting with the proprietor.
We visited many small villages, some with a few cottages and others climbing up the hillsides, such as Cordes Sur Ciel.
Exploring alley-ways, we found quiet cafes with views out over the countryside. Lunch in Cahors at Cotes du Sud was a surprise gourmet treat.
We dropped by a couple of local wineries and were surprised by the hospitality of the vintners.
Great place for a family reunion!

***** "So glad we stayed two weeks in this wonderful village."
R.G and W.J., Washington State
Dear Charlie and Cathy: You were right when you said we would not regret staying for two weeks. We learned so much more about the village, and the people, and just in general loved the time. A very belated thank you for the wonderful lunch we had at Auberge Sombral (do I have that right?). And we loved Lou Faure (again I am not sure about the spelling). We went there every day, for baguettes, croissants, pastries, beer, had a great dinner there, got to know the owner.
We walked the river path, climbed the hill above the village, rented bikes, spent a delightful afternoon at Chateau Cenevieres, being taken on tour by the owner, had two delicious meals created by Penni, loved the local wines (cheap!) and markets, especially Limogne, had lots of very nice picnics (cheese, duck salami, fruit, wine, bread, you know the drill).
A couple weeks after our return to the states, we were surprised to find in the mail a gift which was purchased at the "brocante" in Limogne by the friends who spent the second week with us. It was a small "antique" (1930s) lamp with shade, which I had admired. It now sits, I think quite elegantly, on the small tiger maple table under an antique mirror in the entryway of our condo in Seattle.
So, thank you again for having such an amazing place, in such a beautiful village, in such a beautiful area. We loved it.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Terrific time
Elizabeth & Dan D. (Harrisburg, PA)
We loved staying in Charles' house perched high in the small village. In early May beauty was everywhere - both natural and built environments - with the early stone architecture and beautiful river below with great river walks along limestone caves and formations. Especially enjoyed the amazing food one could buy at the local villages' outdoor markets and then preparing/eating it in the house. Took a great 24 mile bike ride - rental guy was very nice, very obliging - countryside so lush. Really enjoyed the house's modern bathrooms, spacious rooms and views.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Two wonderful, relaxing weeks…
Janice & Richard O. (Washington State)
Sitting at home in front of my computer, it is a treat to begin to recall our relaxing, even lazy, stay at Coeur de Lion and the lovely village of SCL. We were somewhat ambivalent about spending a full two weeks in one place, as we are usually quite active on our vacations, moving every 1-2 days. Therefore, the idea of hanging out in one house and one village for a fortnight was truly unique for us.
This is the perfect place for doing just that! The house is a mixture of history and modernity, which invites both comfort and ease while enjoying the experience of a medieval town. Others have spoken to how well appointed Coeur de Lion is and we would definitely agree! In addition, it is ideally located away from the hustle and bustle of the main tourist area, which is definitely crowded during the day, but is a quick, and definitely steep walk up the hill when a craving for a pastry, an ice cream, or a full meal gets the better of you. It also offers easy access to a village parking lot and even better, a nice path down to the river for some great evening walks.
Our mornings were generally slow to get started, after which we loaded our packs with a loaf of freshly baked bread, some cheese, and fruit from one of the local markets and found our way to one of the many treks in the area. The entire area of the Lot and the Dordogne are rich with history, just with the walking. We came upon Roman and Gothic ruins and saw many remnants of the cultures of the 100 Year War and the War of the Religions.
Additonally, the area is rich with geological treasures and we enjoyed touring several of the caves. The Grotto du Pech Merle is not to be missed with its 30,000 year old pictographs of an ancient people. Simply amazing!
One of the advantages of staying for two full weeks was to find ourselves, over time, truly immersed in the local culture and slowly our faces and even our names became known to the locals. We found the villagers friendly, helpful, and full of life. Late one night at closing time, we were able to borrow an extension ladder on the honor system from the restaurant up the street (that’s a whole different story and one that makes our stay even a bit more memorable) and we returned the favor by eating at the restaurant the next day, and the next. This however was hardly a chore! We also became friends with Maxim and highly recommend his bicycle renting company, Petit de Velo. Maxim is super friendly and drove us wherever we wanted to go to start our day trips. He was willing to pick us up at the end of our rides, but since he was also working at one of the local restaurants, we decided we could just muscle our way up the hills instead.
One of the days we did so, we ended up at our favorite bistro/bar for our somewhat regular late afternoon treat of a scoop of ice cream. We were hot, sweaty, and in our biking gear after a long ride. In our very broken French we ordered not one, but two scoops of our favorites, for after all they are quite small by American standards. When the waitress brought them I exclaimed how very large they were, to which she responded with a big smile, “Oui, you are regulars now!” We felt quite special and fully enjoyed our decadent scoops.
All in all, it was a delight to stay in such a beautifully restored home in a truly lovely village deep in the South of France. Over time, we began to be lulled into the daily rhythm of rural life in this unrushed countryside. A life that seems to run a whole lot slower and be inhabited by people living more in sync with the abundance of the seasons as they take pride and enjoyment in sharing their crafts and agricultural products. Their hard work to make us, as visitors to their countryside, feel nourished in body and soul was much appreciated!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Greatest Family Moments at Coeur De Lion
Chris & Martha H., Brookline, MA
1. Our first “WOW!” moment was when we turned the corner in our car on the bendy road and descended upon the village of St. Circq Lapopie for the first time. The majestic, arrangement of weathered limestone facades, red slated rooftops, chimneys, green tree tops and the village’s prominent church steeple with black crows circling, all protruding from high on the cliffs, a natural extension of the winding Lot river valley below.
2. Passing through the ancient gate into the heart of the medieval village; the row of stone homes and store fronts lining the narrow road, each distinguished by a heavy wood, arched or rectangle framed door, iron or brass knockers, linen curtained windows -- some brightly shuttered; a pot of freshly cut flowers or cotton sheets hanging to dry in the summer sun from a second floor balcony.
3. Waking to the music of the village birds outside our window and the sun splashing the sky with red and pink color. Curling up with a book on the window sill in the family room of Coeur de Leon, with the French window wide open, taking in the smell of freshly brewed coffee and the morning sounds of the village and the voices of people passing below.
4. Cafe au lait and chocolate or almond croissants at the village cafe at the top of the hill; wine and cheese at sunset at the stone table out back enjoying the river valley view; preparing fresh fish from Cahors market and enjoying a candlelit family dinner at home; tasting delicious duck dishes in local village restaurants. Exploring over 600 hundred years of history through all the hidden nooks and crannies of the village; climbing the massive rock to the highest point of the village; day hikes down to the river to swim, and walking or biking along the miles of river path past haystacks and farm fields. Exploring ancient caves and castles in the beauty of the surrounding French countryside.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "Perfect Vacation for Family of Five"
Alison and Ted (Brookline, MA)
We spent a wonderful week at Coeur de Lion in August 2014. The house is amazing-- it magically and beautifully blends the wonder of medieval ambience with every possible modern comfort and amenity. We made two visits to the supermarche in Cahors but otherwise bought all our food at local markets, in a different town each day of the week. Then we enjoyed lunch or dinner on the outdoor terrace or at the wonderful dining table. We loved being able to descent the path behind the house to the towpath, and to jog or hike in both directions. Some of the highlights of our week included our visit to Chateau de Cinevieres, where we met the 94 year old proprietor as we toured the property, and our discovery of the Domaine Dols winery, where we tasted several scrumptious wines (and were sad to learn that there was no shipping to the US). We also really enjoyed our visit to the Pech Merle caves and the town of Figeac, among others. We would LOVE to visit again-- the people we met everywhere were so warm and friendly and appreciative of our efforts to speak French, the countryside was beautiful, the house so comfortable and special. It was a perfect vacation!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "Fantastic stay for foodies, bikers, photographers, sightseers!"
BAH (Boston, MA)
We all had a fantastic time staying at Coeur de Lion! We were an eclectic group of seven…including foodies, bikers, photographers and sightseers and we took full advantages of the village, surrounding areas and the amenities in the lovely restored home. After our various activities during the day, we all loved coming back to the house just to relax comparing notes on our day before enjoying our meals together whether “at home” or trying the local restaurants.
So many terrific adventures including
· trips to the local markets (Cahors and the smaller Limogne) where we purchased local produce, fish, pates and cheeses. Because one of our crew is a celebrated chef, we cooked a few fabulous meals together…the open layout of the common area is perfect with the great kitchen, beautiful light streaming into the room and a nice big table to enjoy our meal replete with the local wines (and Fenelon apertifs).
· going to the Painted Caves at Grotto du Pech Merle, the Gates of Hell and Rocamadour (and of course, eating treats along the way)
· visiting the lovely Château de Cénevières (and the ride there is spectacular)
· exploring the challenging local winding roads either by bike or car just stopping along the way to pick flowers, buying great pastries and yes, more wine
· eating at the local restaurants….Our favorite was the one right up the street from the house…we ate duck everyway imaginable- foie gras, riclettes, roasted, grilled, etc. Loved the walnuts, cheeses and pastries!
· walking along the river with the beautiful limestone carvings, capped by a fun swim in the river….two of us also went kayaking
· just enjoying walking through the village, stopping in at the lovely boutiques.. we really liked the local artisans then stopping for a drink
· watching the sun go down (there are amazing views of the valley right outside the lower level door of the house) plus on the top of the hill behind the church
I was staying in the downstairs bedroom that has a door directly to the outside when I heard a lot of commotion from the trekkers who come up the hill from the river to explore St. Cirque…the rest of the crew came outside to see what was up. A pack mule (his name was snoopy) carries their gear and the poor little guy got spooked when he had to climb a few stairs…everyone coaxed and prodded him to finally he made it to the cheers of all…you never know when to expect the unexpected!
I had never been in that part of France and just loved the area and the history…coupled by staying in such a beautiful welcoming home (we loved the décor, modern amenities and the appointments). At night, when the tourists left, we had the village all to ourselves, which makes the location even more special... It truly was a great week and I highly recommend a stay at Couer de Lion…. I hope to go back there again in the future!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "Trip of a lifetime!"
Jeff & Dana (Boston, MA)
As for your home and the region, I cannot say enough. The house was perfect (we were the ones that had problems with the kitchen sink, handled quickly and professionally despite the distance etc, thank you!). The home is gorgeous and fully equipped with all we needed. The town is beyond adorable. We spent every morning and evening with a stroll around town. We felt welcomed and even a bit like a local after just a week. Our favorite restaurant was restaurant L'Oustal. The shop owners were delightful. The views!!! All amazing.
Each day we could set out on foot to explore the region. Jeff navigated us with some sort of hiking app. Two days stand out in particular although they were all interesting, picturesque and loads of fun. In Bouzie, we dined at Les Deux Valles and then went caving. None of us have ever done anything like that before. It was definitely way out of my comfort zone, yet magnificent and exciting while frightening and challenging at the same time.
Another day we hiked to a restaurant called La Terrace Romantiqe in Calvignac. The views were lovely and we were the only diners. The owner prepared us a lovely lunch. It was a great afternoon. We also hiked through Cenevieres, visited Cahors (loved the farmers market!)!, and went to the winery (Chateau de Haute-Serre- winery eh, but fantastic lunch!) Overall. It was a trip of a lifetime. What a special home!

Carla H. (Rochester, MN)
This was my third time staying in this wonderful village. The newly renovated Coeur de Lion was my first choice as it was highly recommended by friends and rental owners in the area. It was spectacular. I could tell the minute I walked in that the interior design was done by Nerida DeJong, my favorite artist. It has the feel of old world charm with all desired modern comforts.
(We quickly became owners of nespresso machines upon returning home.)
There were just three of us staying in this huge estate, but felt it to be both warm and cozy due to the layout. As for location, what can I say...it is located in the most aesthetically pleasing little village in all the world.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "Wonderful House in a Stunningly Beautiful Village"
David P. (Exeter, NH)
Our one-week stay at Coeur de Lion in St. Cirq Lapopie was truly extraordinary. The house is magnificent. It is spacious and comfortable, with the feel of a medieval dwelling but with first-rate contemporary appliances and tasteful furnishings. The beds are extraordinarily comfortable; the bathrooms are modern with fantastic showers and soaking tubs; and there are many other small but wonderful touches. The lower level, second floor and third floor each have sleeping areas that are quiet, private and roomy. The first floor has a great kitchen and large dining and sitting areas. The house was perfect for our three couples, but it could accommodate more people and would be luxurious for a couple or small family.
The village is more stunning and unique than we had imagined. On our daily walks to the local restaurants and shops, we repeatedly stopped to just take in the medieval feel and natural beauty. Long walks along the Lot River under majestic limestone cliffs were a highlight. The neighboring town of Tour de Faure (about a 20 minute walk) has a small market and a good bakery. People in the restaurants and shops are friendly and the prices are reasonable.
Because we love to walk and prefer public transportation, we decided not to rent a car. We recommend this for people who are enthusiastic walkers. The roads are narrow and the local drivers are assertive, and this reinforced our decision to leave the driving to others. We took a restful 5-hour train ride from Paris to Cahors. We arranged in advance (by internet) to be met at the train by Philippe Merle taxi (based in Tour de Faure), which has a regular sedan and a larger van that accommodates 6 or 7 passengers. The cost for 5 travelers from Cahors to St. Cirq was 60 Euros. We also took a taxi to see the wonderful 15,000 year-old cave paintings at Pech Merle (about a 15 minute ride). The driver dropped us off and picked us up—prompt, polite and helpful. We traveled by bus from Tour de Faure to Cahors (an easy trip) to see the famous ancient bridge and Henri Martin museum, and to visit the fantastic weekly outdoor market. But most of our time was spent in the village, soaking up the local culture, sampling the local wine and beer, and enjoying the house and the views.
Coeur de Lion provided the perfect setting for a memorable family vacation—We just loved it!

The stay in your home in St-Cirq-Lapopie was the highlight of our vacation. We have used VRBO frequently in the US, Italy and France over the last 6 years and stayed in some wonderful homes, but we all agree, your home is our favorite! Not only is it situated in a lovely medieval village with beauty and history at every turn, the interior of the home was beautifully completed. The layout of the floor plan, the quality finishes, the comfortable and charming interior design, all came together to make this a perfect vacation home. I can’t really say enough about the comfort, i.e. linen sheets; plenty of hot water (with great water pressure) for three couples; great appliances; lovely furnishings, comfortable beds. The list goes on and on. The pictures actually don’t do your home justice, which isn’t always the case!
Going to markets and preparing dinners together is something we enjoy doing, and your kitchen was a perfect set-up for a lot of cooks in the kitchen.
The Patisserie across from the tourism office has the best coffee and pastries of anywhere we visited over almost 3 weeks. A dinner we had in a lovely restaurant in the village was also one of our favorites. We loved exploring the village, rode bicycles by the Lot River, visited chateaus, and experienced the beautiful French countryside.
I would HIGHLY recommend your home for a vacation destination.
Recommended for: Romantic getaway, adventure seekers, families with young children, sightseeing, girls getaway, families with teenagers, age 55+.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ "The best vacation ever..."
A.M.L. (Seattle, WA)
I had the great fortune to stay in Coeur de Lion in October 2013. I also have a house in the village, but I had longed to live in and experience this new renovation. The house is magnificent and the location is unparalleled for beauty and medieval charm. The owner has brought it back from a ruin to a beautiful, tasteful home with a lot of “wow”. Coeur de Lion shows thoughtful attention to the details of its ancient heritage while imbedding all the modern comforts.
I am particular about vacation houses. I want to feel at home, I want to feel I've discovered something very special, and I want to feel like the owner cares about my comfort and enjoyment. Sleeping in the king-size bed was a dream. The bathrooms are a welcome luxury for the weary traveler – even heated towel racks! The Nespresso machine in the kitchen provides a lovely crema to top a delicious cup of coffee. The kitchen provides the most sophisticated cooks with all the tools and features for gourmet cooking. I would love to come back for the cooking classes they plan to offer (let me know!).
The location in the village is excellent. With a simple walk to the top of the village through 14th-15th c. France, you can find morning croissants or go out for dinner. There are many wonderful restaurants within a few blocks. The regional food abounds with rich flavors of duck, foie gras, truffles, walnuts and local cheeses. Local markets are a shopper’s paradise for anything from regional Malbec wines to local, fresh organic produce to cook a stellar meal at home.
Charles and Cathy are hosts who know how to exceed expectations. Many guests want support for planning logistics, as well as access to information and advice on activities and experiences that only an insider knows. They provide all that and more. I cannot think of any improvements to suggest. It's just a stroll from my own house; but I'll want to stay there again!
(First Review)
From D.C.L.M. (Massachusetts) October, 2013:
We stayed at Coeur de Lion for one week and wish we could have stayed there a year. The house was so comfortable and fun to be in (fabulous kitchen, great bedrooms, elegant but very homey) that at times we didn't want to go out. But you have to go out. The village is a small miracle of medieval beauty-- some touristy shops, for sure, but some wonderful shops, excellent studios (visit Nerida de Jong), and very fine restaurants.
The tourists come and go, but when you live here (even for only a week), you feel like the town is yours. There's hardly any automobile traffic, so kids can wander the streets quite safely-- and you can't get lost, really.
We commend the owner's for creating such a great house, and for locating it in one of the most beautiful places in the world. What a treat. Thank you, thank you.
(First Look at Coeur de Lion)
From E.M. (Vermont) April 2013:
Just a note to tell you that we looked in on the renovations during the week we stayed in St. Cirq Lapopie this past April, and the work looked fantastic. We took a tour and we all agreed: the house is ideal in size, and ideally located. The open living space as you enter through that old oak door is beautiful-- not only good light and great views, but a warm, classy, AND comfortable place to hang out with cocktails or beer and/or crackers and chèvre, for good conversations about the days events. And, of course, we know something about the days events! Even in the first part of April, the village and the valley are gorgeous. We walked all over the countryside, rode bicycles along the river, and visited neighboring markets. We didn't even get to the caves (next time, for sure). And we found some favorite restaurants in town, as well as the new boulangerie which we visited many mornings, just up the street. Croissants and pain au chocolat to equal the best of Paris, in our humble opinions.
We really wished we could have stayed in Coeur de Lion-- it is just a marvelous space, and it is clear that the renovation work is of a high order. Thank you for telling us about St. Cirq Lapopie, motivating us to visit (we are really glad we didn't just grab the usual country house with a pool-- instead, we had a real French experience). And next time, and there will be a next time, we will be staying at your house. Vive Coeur de Lion!
